Another St Wilfrid BBQ Success!

After the disappointment when poor weather caused the event to be postponed in July, the second attempt to BBQ in September proved very successful with around thirty members, family and friends attending. The BBQ was generously hosted by Adrian & Annie with Adrian also acting as Chief Chef. The delicious food was complemented by specially brewed beers, courtesy of our resident Master Brewer Andy and his assistant Linda, together with wines and soft drinks.

Many thanks go out too to everyone for the generous donations of salads and desserts. Fine dining, good drinking and excellent company! Happily on this occasion, the English summer weather was kind!

Again, many thanks to everyone who was able to support or contribute to this event with particular thanks to Adrian, Annie, Andy & Linda for all their hard work. Their and everyone’s generosity has raised a further £715 for the Master’s Charity. Fantastic! From an enjoyment, social and fundraising perspective – the BBQ really was once again a great success

Alfie's Story

Meet Alfie, a remarkable 7-year-old boy with an extraordinary mission. Against all odds, he has taken on the incredible challenge of swimming the distance of the English Channel to raise funds for the Leeds Children's Heart Surgery Fund. Over the course of two months, Alfie is dedicating his time and energy to this cause that lies close to his heart. Inspired by the recent success his brother Ozzy had in a similar swimming challenge and supporting one of the Master's Charities at St Wilfrid Lodge he is an example to us all!

Alfie's determination and compassion are truly inspiring. Despite his tender age, he understands the importance of supporting others who may be facing difficult circumstances. The Leeds Children's Heart Surgery Fund provides vital support to children and their families, ensuring that they receive the best possible care and treatment for heart-related conditions.

With the heart of a champion, Alfie has fearlessly jumped into the pool day after day, aiming to swim the remarkable 21-mile distance of the English Channel. He is driven by his desire to make a positive impact and contribute to a cause that supports those in need. His unwavering dedication has captured the attention and hearts of his community, as well as individuals from far and wide who have been touched by his story.

Alfie's journey is not only physically demanding but also mentally challenging. There are moments when fatigue sets in, and doubt creeps into his mind. However, his resilience and determination continue to push him forward. Supported by his family and friends, Alfie remains focused, knowing that every stroke he takes brings him closer to his goal - helping those who face uncertain health battles.

Challenge met by St Wilfrid!

St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to take up the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge again after their last outing in 2019 and despite the very mixed weather conditions the four walkers did themselves and the Lodge proud!

It was an early start for Gerry, Joe, Paddy and Richard who left the Horton in Ribblesdale start point just after 7am. The Yorkshire Three Peaks includes Pen-y-Ghent , Whernside and Ingleborough . The walkers started their 25-mile route climbing first up Pen-y-Ghent then towards the Ribblehead Viaduct, up Whernside then down to Chapel le Dale, and finally up and down Ingleborough to finish back in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Over 60,000 steps, twelve hours of grit & determination - a superb effort by everyone!

Our heroes were raising funds for St George’s Crypt with which the Lodge has had a long association.

£3100 Donation to Henshaws

The Brethren of St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to welcome back Kate Simpson with her colleague Flora Simpson from Henshaws Charity for a cheque presentation and update on the work of the charity.

Henshaws had been chosen as the Master’s Charity during W Bro Joe Atala’s year as Master and through numerous fundraising events over £2000 was raised. In addition one of our member’s sons, Oscar ‘Ozzy’ Calam was inspired to take up a ‘Swim the Channel’ challenge over the summer break which he aimed to [& succeeded in] completing before his ninth birthday! He raised almost £1100 in the process. Fantastic!

We were therefore delighted to welcome Ozzy along for the presentation with brother Alfie, and proud mum Kasia. Ozzy was also presented with a special trophy donated by the Lodge to mark his achievement. Sadly, Joe could not be there on the evening but I know that he and all the Brethren are delighted that Henshaws is to benefit from the donation of £3100, which we know will be put to excellent use!

From their bespoke campus in Harrogate, Henshaw Specialist College offer day and residential places for young people aged 16 to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities.

Whether preparing for employment, making friends or learning to live more independently, they can work with young people to make their aspirations possible and goals a reality.

Bubbles, Beer & Cream Teas

Worshipful Master Andy and his wife Linda were pleased to welcome around twenty five members, partners and guests to their afternoon of bubbles, beer and cream teas.

Andy served up some of his specially brewed ales and Linda ensured that there was plenty of prosecco to go round. Despite the poor forecast, the weather stayed warm and sunny so we were able to enjoy the good company outdoors in the garden. A number of the ladies baked to ensure there were plenty of delicious home-made scones for the cream teas and fresh strawberries! A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and I am delighted to report that ticket sales and the raffle raised an excellent total of £500 for the Master’s Charities: the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and St George’s Crypt.

Brian Celebrates 50 Years in St Wilfrid

Around sixty members and guests and visitors were able to join our Senior Past Master, W Bro Brian H L Mason, PPSGW, as he celebrated fifty years as a member of St Wilfrid Lodge. We were pleased to welcome VW Bro John Rushworth, PGSwdB PDPGM, who presented him with a special certificate from the Provincial Grand Master to mark fifty years in Freemasonry as a member of St Wilfrid Lodge. Brian had been initiated into St Wilfrid Lodge on May 10 ^th 1973 and during the presentation he and John chatted and reminisced about Brian’s long and distinguished Masonic career.

We then retired to the ballroom where the celebrations continued. W Bro Paul Brunner expanded on Brian’s life in his Toast, paying tribute to his life in St Wilfrid Lodge and reflecting on his many career and sporting achievements. Over the last fifty years, Brian has been an integral member of our Lodge and now, as Senior Past Master, he continues to inspire, guide and drive the Lodge forward enabling the changes that reflect Freemasonry in the 21 ^st century whilst maintaining the essential traditions and principles of the order.

We were pleased to welcome a large number of visitors from other Lodges including a number of Grand and Provincial Grand Officers, fraternal visitors from the Lodge of Fidelity, other distinguished guests and two Candidates who are to join the Lodge soon. A reflection of the high esteem Brian is held in! To add to the proceedings, we were also entertained with some musical contributions from Bro Rafael and Bro Howard whilst we dined and celebrated. Congratulations Brian! An excellent evening in great company to mark a very special occasion!

A Great Start to the Master's Social Calendar

The sun came out and blue skies marked the start of our new Master’s Social Calendar as over twenty members, partners and friends met for an excellent morning stroll around the RSPB Nature Reserve at St Aidan’s. It proved an ideal day for spotting the varied birdlife on the site and the experience was richly enhanced through the expert guidance of Jeff and Laura who told us where and what to look for, the sounds to listen for and lots of interesting details about all we saw.

After our thoroughly enjoyable visit we retired to the nearby White Horse Inn at Ledston for a very enjoyable lunch [& a drink or two] in, as always, excellent company!

A New Master for St Wilfrid

This year our Master Elect Andy had to wait an extra month before being Installed as Master of St Wilfrid Lodge. The ceremony is usually held in April but as the Worshipful Master was away on wedding duties in the Caribbean a special dispensation was given for the Installation to be held in May this year and I think that all who attended would agree it was worth the wait!

We were delighted to welcome forty-three Brethren and visitors to witness and celebrate an excellent ceremony. We were very pleased to Welcome W Bro Andrew Wellock, PPJGW, the personal representative of the Provincial Grand Master together with numerous distinguished guests and friends to a memorable ceremony.

These included W Bro Ian Lewis, PSGD PAPGM, a very good friend of Andy’s together with a number of guests from Legiolium Lodge No 1542, Andy’s Mother Lodge and where he had served as Master in 2001.

Retiring Master Joe led the ceremony in style, ably assisted by his team of Installing Officers. A great deal of hard work by the Brethren of the Lodge behind the scenes in preparing for the day, issuing invitations, printing menus and organising table plans, preparing the Temple and the Festival of St John certainly paid off! A super evening for members and guests alike followed by a great opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, catch up with friends and make new ones over a delicious meal in the Castle Grove Ballroom.

Joe has enjoyed a very good year as Master. As always, the support and involvement of the Lodge members has been tremendous, new members have joined us with others waiting in the wings and now Andy and his newly appointed team are looking forward to taking the Lodge further forward in the year ahead.

Warden's Night ends Joe's year in style!

As Joe’s year as Master of St Wilfrid Lodge draws to a close, members and friends came together for a final flourish: Warden’s Night! We gathered for a delicious meal at Garforth Golf Club. As always, great company, good food and great ‘craic’!

After his very busy and successful year, Joe was presented with a gift from Wardens Andy & Paul. It was also an opportunity to thank Helen for all the support she has given Joe during the year. Our newest Master Mason, Howard, did the honours and presented her with a gift on behalf of all the Brethren.

Particular thanks go to our Wardens, Andy and Paul, for organising the event and to Adrian for liaising with the Golf Club and organising the disco for the evening. An excellent celebration to bring the Masonic year to a close and we now look forward to the next event when we can meet up again!

The raffle was very generously supported and I am pleased to report that, in total, the evening raised a further £170 for the Master’s Charity, Henshaws.

The Grand Total stands £1933.50 with a further £1060 raised by Ozzy Calam with his ‘Swim the Channel Challenge’.

Around thirty members and guests assembled to enjoy a tutored tasting of seven different beers by our resident Master Brewer, Andy. Another very successful and enjoyable St Wilfrid occasion! Particular thanks to Graham, John & Mel for facilitating the use of Fairfax Lodge for the evening, to James for supplying the wine, Adrian for the samples of his lager and the ladies who helped with serving the beer and setting up the supper.

Murder Mystery Dinner

Another Murder at Castle Grove!

It was exactly three years ago that the last villainous murder took place at Castle Grove but St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to welcome back the Whodunwot Players [aka Kippax Dramatic Society] to entertain us and put our detective skills to the test with their latest mystery, ‘Murder at Kyllem Hall’.

Around sixty members and guests assembled to enjoy a three course dinner whilst the mystery unfolded and as always the solution wasn’t easy to come by.

As usual, I was totally wrong but am pleased to report that one table solved it – the first time this had happened for this mystery according to the cast!

This was the fifth time the Whodunwot Players had visited the Lodge and they did not disappoint. Thanks to an enthralling script and excellent acting this dramatisation managed to entertain, confuse, amuse and challenge our investigative and observational skills.

The raffle was very generously supported and I am pleased to report it raised £300 for the Master’s Charity, Henshaws. Many thanks to everyone who donated prizes or bought tickets!

St Wilfrid Lodge Supports the

2022 Castle Grove Masonic Festive Toy and Gift Appeal

This year we are again looking for your help to support some of the most vulnerable children in Leeds at Christmas in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis

As you are aware, the Castle Grove Festive Toy & Gift Appeal was launched in November 2018 as a way of bringing all the Castle Grove Lodges and Chapters together to provide something tangible to young people in our community during the festive season.

The response from both individual Brethren, Lodges and Chapters to the 2021 Appeal was overwhelming. In addition to donations of toys and gifts, over £2,000 was donated which through your generosity enabled us to help six organisations, providing toys and essential items to 1000’s of children and young people in the City:

Leeds Children’s Charity, Homeless Street Angels , Leeds Baby Bank , St George’s Crypt, Leeds Jewish Welfare Board, East Leeds SILC Jack Clark

The gifts included toys, books, Craft activities, selection boxes, pyjamas, hats and gloves, toiletries and children’s blankets, nappies and other essential baby items and soft Glow Sticks for Children with special needs.

We are once again asking for your assistance.

As we are all far too aware, the current cost of living situation is pushing more families than ever into awful difficulties, both financially and mentally, with children suffering terribly as a result.

We are once again appealing for your help in bringing some level of joy to those young ones this December. Rather than receiving donations of gifts we are again asking for donations of money with which we can purchase a range of suitable gifts on your behalf.

If, however you wish to donate toys and gifts (they must be new) rather than money, please bring them to Castle Grove Masonic Hall and leave them in the room adjoining the large Temple where the Lodge storage cupboards are located – please do not wrap them.

We would also appeal to any Brethren with suitable retail/wholesale business contacts or connections to approach them for donations or discount towards this Appeal – it’s always worth asking!

Blue Skies for Cyril Green

Good weather greeted our Lodge golfing athletes as they met to battle for the annual Cyril Green Trophy event. This year, as the event was a little earlier than usual, numbers were not as large as they have been but this did not distract from the competition with the golfers enjoying a great sporting afternoon at Garforth Golf Club.

The Covid pandemic had meant that despite being able to meet for the golfing competition, this was the first time in three years that the ‘supporters’ could come along to congratulate the winner and all the competitors. We all met at Vesuvius, as Neapolitan Pizzeria in nearby Garforth, to congratulate Graham and enjoy a lovely meal in excellent company. Well done Graham, who retains the Trophy for the second year! Well done to all our all our athletes and to Chris, our Golf Secretary for organising the event.

The second social event of the masonic year proved a tremendous success with forty-five members, family and friends attending. St Wilfrid Bake Off 2022

The social calendar of the masonic year got off to an excellent start with the St Wilfrid Lodge Bake Off. This was the brainchild of Paul Brunner who organised the whole evening. Members and their wives and partners were challenged to bake a cake for the evening and six contestants stepped up to the mark producing some excellent cakes!

After a supper, each of the contestants was asked to present their cake and talk about why and how they made it. This proved to be stand up comedy! For some this was the first time they had ever baked. However each of the cakes proved delicious and presented a difficult task for the judges who sampled each one. Mr Kipling would have been exceedingly impressed!

Twenty three members, wives, partners and friends were able to attend the event and happily there was plenty of cake left after the judging for everyone to sample the entries. Very little remained!

After much careful deliberation by the judges in a closely fought contest Margaret Vaughan’s cake was chosen as the winner and our new Master Joe Atala was delighted to present her with a bottle of wine to celebrate!

Thank you to Paul for organising such a successful and enjoyable evening, to all the bakers and judges and to everyone who was able to support this event. The icing on the cakes is that thanks to everyone’s generosity in coming and also buying raffle tickets, the Master’s Charity has got off to a flying start with £230 raised. Thank you for your support.

It’s been a long wait for Joe but our new Master is finally Installed!

Sadly, due to the pandemic, our Master Elect Joe had to wait an extra two years before being Installed as Master of St Wilfrid Lodge. We were delighted to welcome forty Brethren and visitors to witness and celebrate the ceremony. We were very pleased to Welcome W Bro Dr Jonathan Lippiat, AGDC, the personal representative of the Provincial Grand Master together with numerous distinguished guests and friends to a memorable ceremony. These included W Bro Ronnie Mackinnon, a former Master & member of the Lodge, brought especial greetings from his Lodge of St Kilda No 881 on the Isle of Skye.

Retiring Master Stefan led the ceremony in style, ably assisted by his team of Installing Officers. A great deal of hard work by the Brethren of the Lodge behind the scenes in preparing for the day, issuing invitations, printing menus and organising table plans, preparing the Temple and the Festival of St John paid off! A super evening for members and guests alike followed by a great opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, catch up with friends and make new ones over a delicious meal in the Castle Grove Ballroom.

Stefan has enjoyed a very successful but, thanks to the pandemic, at times challenging three years as Master. Back in 2019 no-one could have predicted what an unprecedented three years lay ahead. For a small Lodge, St Wilfrid have lost some highly respected, hugely experienced and exemplary Brethren. Proportionately maybe one of the hardest hit Lodges in the country. Happily the support and involvement of the Lodge members has been tremendous and

now Joe and his newly appointed team are looking forward to taking the Lodge forward in the year ahead.

St Wilfrid Lodge is 75 !

2022 marks the 75 ^th anniversary of the Consecration of St Wilfrid Lodge and it’s March Regular Meeting coincided to the date with that day in 1947 when Masonry in St Wilfrid began on 10 ^th March.

To mark this special occasion the Brethren of St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to welcome a large number of friends and distinguished guests to join the celebrations. There was a short Regular Meeting followed by a celebratory meal in the ballroom. Displays of memorabilia, photographs and artefacts were on show and a special booklet had been produced to commemorate the event. Good company, great speeches and shared memories amongst friends old and new helped to make it a night to remember.

A special cake had been organised by Adrian for the occasion and there was a special raffle organised by Amit which raised a fantastic £425 for the Masonic Charities Ukraine Relief Chest. Thank you everyone for your generosity.

£1500 for the William Merritt Centre !

After almost two and a half years since they initially visited, St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to welcome back General Manager David Blythe and Paediatric Occupational Therapist Sophie Thomson to be presented with a cheque for £1500 raised as part of the Master’s Charity. They had first visited in May 2019 to talk to us about the history and work of the Centre at our Supper Night.

The Centre is one of the two charities chosen as the ‘Master’s Charities’ that year together with the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund. Funds were raised throughout the year, primarily at our numerous social events. Funds were raised specifically to support children and young people who use the Centre but sadly the Covid-19 pandemic delayed everything!

Happily, thanks to the generosity of Lodge members, their wives, partners, families and friends, the Centre is now able to significantly enrich it’s Toy Library for children and young people. David and Sophie also told us about the exciting plans to secure a specially designed Mobile Toy Library with which they can reach out to communities in and around Leeds and also across Yorkshire and the North of England.

Leeds Freemasons give gifts for children this Christmas

St Wilfrid Lodge and Freemasons from across Leeds have again been helping to ensure hundreds of children will receive at least one present this year.

As in previous years, members of Lodges and side orders who meet in Headingley’s Castle Grove Masonic Hall have been asked to donate a present or money to buy gifts, which are then donated to a number of local charities. However, because of the ongoing coronavirus situation Toy Appeal co-ordinator Graham Shiers asked for financial contributions instead, resulting in an avalanche of cash, toy and clothing donations exceeding £3000 in value.

Donations from the Appeal were this year boosted by a very generous donation of a large number of toys from Firas to St Georges Crypt. Crypt Chaplain Roger Quick was delighted with the generous donations.

As you are aware, the Castle Grove Festive Toy & Gift Appeal was launched in November 2018 as a way of bringing all the Castle Grove Lodges together to provide something tangible to young people in our community during the festive season.

The 2021 Appeal was launched in October and the response from both Brethren and Lodges and Chapters has been absolutely overwhelming. In addition to donations of toys and gifts, we raised in excess of £2,000 to purchase further gifts which has enabled us to help six organisations this year, recognising the incredible work they do for children and young people.

We provided a range of toys and gifts including nappies, baby wipes, baby shampoo, body wash, nappy cream and other essential baby items

St George’s Crypt

The Charity is helping some 2000 families across Leeds living in dire poverty – your generosity allowed us to provide toys, and gifts including toiletries, pyjamas, hats and scarves

We are delighted to announce that this year St Wilfrid Lodge have donated the grand total of £1000 to the St George’s Crypt Christmas Appeal thanks to the generous donations in lieu of sending Christmas Cards this year within the Lodge. Despite Castle Grove being shut and Lodges unable to meet, the response from Castle Grove Brethren, Lodges, Chapters and Side Orders for the 2020 Toy & Gift Appeal was truly overwhelming. Over £3,000 was donated by Lodges and Brethren which enabled us to purchase toys and gifts on your behalf to help six organisations, recognising the work they do for children and young people.

Through your generosity we were able to buy over 900 toys and gifts, plus we received donations of brand new clothing, toys and, from one major manufacturer, five huge cartons of bath toys and children’s feeding sets.

The Covid 19 situation has pushed many families into awful difficulties, both financially and mentally, with children suffering terribly as a result. So yet again I am appealing for your help in bringing some level of joy to those young ones this December. Although Castle Grove has re-opened and Lodges are meeting, rather than receiving donations of gifts we are again asking for donations of money with which we can purchase a range of suitable gifts on your behalf.

Cyril Green Trophy 2021

Despite the depleted numbers, four of our golfing athletes met at Garforth Golf Club to contest the Cyril Green Trophy. Good weather enabled a very enjoyable afternoon of golf with Graham eventually winning through to capture the trophy. Congratulations Graham and well done to our other competitors, Brian, Chris and Graeme. Many thanks go to Brian for organising the event and to Adrian, who could not join in this time, for facilitating the golf.

A group of ‘supporters’ joined some of the golfers for a celebratory meal at a nearby Italian restaurant. Sadly catering issues at the golf club meant that the usual social event at the 19 ^th hole was not possible this year. Hopefully ‘normal service’ will resume next time!

Robson Trophy 2021

The Lodge were represented in the annual Robson Trophy match against The Lodge of Fidelity by Graham Fuller, Graeme Webber and myself. Chris Chappell had to cry off at the last moment, having to isolate due to a case of covid at school.
Despite our best efforts, in glorious sunshine at Leeds Golf Club, our combined score of 79 was nowhere near enough to trouble their best threescores (out of 6) which totalled 108! My thanks to my team for their efforts!! We will endeavour to regain the trophy next year!

After Golf we were joined by Paul Davis, Richard Vaughan, Paddy Hostford and Rodolfo Paniagua for drinks on the balcony followed by an excellent dinner and a few formalities, later returning to the balcony for more conversation. My thanks are due again to them for their support in the evening.

The first official event for St Wilfrid adventure-us was a very successful and thoroughly enjoyable visit to the Thimbleby Shooting Ground. Set within Thimbleby Estate near Northallerton and surrounded by thousands of acres of stunning countryside, the ground lies in an idyllic rural setting within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Established in 1988, Thimbleby Shooting Ground is now one of the country’s premier shooting grounds. A great time was had by all and we’re already looking forward to the next event!

As you may be aware from conversations at our recent zoom meetings, Amit & James have been busy planning some activities which are to supplement our usual social calendar.

These are planned to be of an outdoor/adventurous nature and are scheduled for the first Sunday of each month. An initial draft list is below to give you a flavour of some of the ideas they have had. The plan is to provide opportunities to try out perhaps new activities, meet up in different informal settings, have some fun and hopefully give opportunities to people who might be interested in Freemasonry [or may not yet know they are interested!] to meet us. The activities are to supplement and not replace our other events and recruitment opportunities.

The attached list is an initial draft. Amit and James are keen to include other ideas and suggestions. Maybe you have an idea, skill/expertise or contact. If so, we would be grateful if you could let Amit, James or myself know.

Spitfire Raffle

This is a tremendous fund raising event to provide much needed funds for WRMCL which has seen a much reduced income during 2020/2021 due to the unprecedented Covid19 pandemic.

Initially tickets are being sold online from 1st May 2021 and our PGM is to purchase the first raffle tickets.

Hard copy raffle tickets will be distributed to all Charity Stewards in the Province for sale from September 2021, when the majority of Lodges resume normal meetings.

Tickets are priced at £2 each and it would be fantastic if they could be sold in blocks of 5.

The draw for this magnificent prize, kindly donated by a brother in the province will be drawn at the 2022 PGL Meeting.

Castle Grove Masonic Hall planned to reopen from 1st September 2021

Provincial Grand Lodge (PGL) and Provincial Grand Chapter (Chapter) are not commencing activities until the 1st of September 2021. Rulers or Acting Officers of PGL will not attend any Provincial or Lodge events and similarly Chapter Officers will not attend Chapter events until the 1st of September 2021. Province consider it prudent to postpone the planning of larger events until after the 1st of September 2021. The recommendation has been made by Province in case progress nationally or locally in removing restrictions falters. There are concerns about the probability of a third wave of the virus and further restrictions might be imposed locally or nationally.

Similarly, the directors of Castle Grove Masonic Hall consider a prudent and cautious approach to the health and wellbeing of all members and visitors to the Masonic Hall is the appropriate course to follow. Therefore, at a directors meeting held on Wednesday 14th April 2021, after discussion and consideration of all the factors, it was resolved to follow the lead of Province and not re-engage in Masonic Activities at Castle Grove Masonic Hall before 1st September 2021. The wellbeing and health of the members of Lodges meeting at Castle Grove Masonic Hall is the principal concern of the directors. Further information regarding access to the Castle Grove Masonic Hall building and facilities will be issued in due course as part of the resumption planning process and to promote the full use of the premises after the 1st September 2021 by all.

I am delighted to report that this year’s Christmas Appeal organised in lieu of Christmas Cards within the Lodge means that the Crypt are receiving over £1300 in donations and gift aid from St Wilfrid Lodge this year.

Martin Barry at the Crypt Fundraising Team was ‘gobsmacked’ when he learnt of the total and hopes to give us a conducted tour in the New Year.

Leeds Lodges Christmas Toy Appeal

St Wilfrid Lodge and Freemasons from across Leeds have been helping to ensure hundreds of children will receive at least one present this year.

In previous years, members of Lodges and side orders who meet in Headingley’s Castle Grove Masonic Hall have been asked to donate a present or money to buy gifts, which were then donated to a number of local charities. However, because the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced the closure of Castle Grove, toy appeal co-ordinator Graham Shiers asked for financial contributions instead, resulting in an avalanche of cash donations in excess of £3000 plus donations of brand new toys and clothing.

Graham , who has coordinated the appeal, said: “The generosity of my fellow Freemasons is just overwhelming, and because of this we are able to increase the list of recipients this year, with The Leeds Children’s Hospital, the Leeds Children’s Charity, the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board, Barnardo’s. Leeds Baby Bank, PhysCap Children’s Charity and Homeless Street Angels now benefitting.

“We’ve been blown away by the donations to date. In addition to toys and gifts we are also buying more practical presents including pyjamas and winter clothing. We are also now helping four families via Homeless Street Angels, including a single dad whose partner killed herself two years ago. He lost his job due to struggling with child care – he has a ten year old daughter and has nothing for her so we’ll make sure she has a good Christmas. Never in all our years of being Freemasons have we been prouder of being members of this wonderful fraternity. Despite all the hardships that Covid has inflicted, not only has the local membership risen to the occasion, it has done so to the power of ten, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

Castle Grove Lodges Christmas Toy Appeal 2020

St Wilfrid Lodge are delighted to support this appeal!

As a result of the fantastic generosity shown by the Brethren of the Castle Grove Lodges, Chapters and Side Orders last year, over 300 toys and gifts were donated to four very worthy charities last festive season – the Leeds Children’s Hospital, Martin House Hospice for Children and Young People, the Leeds Children’s Charity and Leeds Jewish Welfare Board which received Chanukah gifts for 28 children under its care.

Since its launch two years ago, the Brethren of the Castle Grove Lodges have responded magnificently to this appeal with donations of children’s toys and games, and bath/beauty gift sets for teenagers. Last year we also received some incredibly generous cash donations from both Lodges and individual Brethren which enabled us to not only buy even more gifts, but also hats, scarves, gloves, pyjamas and other suitable winter clothing which were distributed by Leeds Children’s Charity to children living in desperate need across the city.

The Covid 19 situation has not only separated many of us from family and friends and prevented us from seeing each other as we usually do at Castle Grove, but has pushed many families into further difficulties, both financially and mentally, with children suffering terribly as a result. So yet again I am appealing for your help in bringing some level of joy to those young ones this December. Due to the current situation it’s not possible to collect your toys and gifts at Castle Grove so on this occasion we are asking for donations of money with which we will purchase the gifts on your behalf.

St Wilfrid Lodge Christmas Appeal

Brethren, at the Zoom meeting last Thursday, everyone present agreed to support the St George’s Crypt Christmas Appeal this year. The suggestion is that each member makes their donation via the Just Giving page that we have set up (see below).

In addition, one of our Brethren has said he will double the amount that is raised!

We have not met since Scroll Night and have not been able to make our usual weekly contributions to the Alms Fund and the Senior Steward’s Raffle. I hope that in lieu of this you will feel able to make a generous donation to help the Crypt.

Like all charities they are having their work cut out to cover their extensive costs. All their community and corporate fundraising has stopped and they are getting busier and busier as the weather closes in. Brian Victorious in Cyril Green Trophy

With restrictions eased a little, it was possible to safely hold the annual Lodge Golf Event, the Cyril Green Trophy. Adrian managed to arrange for the event to go ahead at Garforth Golf Club and it was fitting that, after a closely fought competition, our hard-working Golf Secretary Brian emerged as the worthy winner.

Sadly the current situation meant that the traditional post-golf social gathering was not possible this year. The golfers did manage to celebrate at Franco’s restaurant and hopefully things will be back to normal soon!

A Murderous Reunion!

For the fourth year running the Whodunwot Players [aka Kippax Dramatic Society] returned by popular demand to entertain us and put our detective skills to the test with their latest mystery, ‘Reunion for Murder’. Seven former colleagues from Collinghall Independent School met up at a reunion hosted by Algernon Smallridge at his remote country residence.

A chance to catch up with old friends? To reminisce in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere? It was ten years to the day since a very suspicious death at the school. The St Wilfrid detectives were out in numbers as almost eighty sleuthing Brethren, wives and friends gathered in the dining room. As we all enjoyed a delicious three course school dinner, events took a tragic turn with a Algernon’s untimely demise!

Clues and red herrings abounded as the teams of detectives tried to solve the baffling crime. Should witnessing a murder be an enjoyable experience? Thanks to an enthralling script and excellent acting this dramatisation managed to entertain, confuse, amuse and challenge our investigative and observational skills.. ‘Really enjoyed that!’ & ‘Are they coming again next year?’ was again the verdict. A great success and a really enjoyable evening in excellent company!

The generously supported raffled raised a superb £450. This was the final fundraising event of the Masonic year and thanks to the tremendous support given to this and all the raffles at each of the events this year, a grand total of over £2700 has been raised for the Master’s Charities, the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and the William Merritt Centre. A big ‘Thank You’ to everyone for their outstanding generosity

The St Wilfrid Clan again gathered to celebrate Burns Night with wives, partners and friends meeting to enjoy convivial meal with Haggis, Scottish Sirloin and Salmon on the menu and a Scottish Quiz. We were again pleased to welcome W. Bro Norman Forsyth to give the traditional ‘Address to the Haggis’ and toast the bard. Another thoroughly enjoyable night in great company!

A generously supported raffle in support of the Master’s charities, the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and the William Merritt Centre, raised a very pleasing £200.

St Wilfrid Lodge Christmas Celebrations Start With A Swing !

St Wilfrid Lodge again enjoyed their festive celebrations in style as almost seventy Brethren, wives, partners and friends gathered for the Christmas Lodge at Castle Grove. We were delighted to welcome back the St Mary’s Youth Theatre Choir who got the evening off to a great start, entertaining us with a selection seasonal songs. The singing was excellent! Our thanks to Cally & Steve together with the young people’s parents for bringing them along again.

The very convivial festive evening continued with an excellent Christmas meal. The occasion was complemented with a festive raffle, which raised a further £235 for the Master’s charities which this year are the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and the William Merritt Centre. Thanks to everyone for their fantastic support!

A thoroughly enjoyable evening all round was concluded with enthusiastic renditions of a number of popular carols led by Laura who then entertained us in style with relaxed seasonal jazz. Another good evening in great company!

On a busy evening at St Wilfrid Lodge the Brethren were delighted to welcome their newest Brother Rafael Giuliani, into the Lodge. The Lodge were also delighted to welcome a large group of distinguished visitors to witness the ceremony including the Past District Grand Master of Hong Kong and the Far East, RW. Bro Peter Wong, Provincial Officers from Yorkshire and Durham and also the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro Ian Lewis, who was visiting in a private capacity .

We are all pleased to congratulate Rafael and wish him many happy and successful years with us.

The Worshipful Master, W.Bro Stefan Kurth, wishes to thank and congratulate his team and everyone who contributed to the ceremony, making this such a memorable occasion for Rafael. Thanks also to all our visitors who came along to support St Wilfrid Lodge and it’s newest member, we are always delighted to welcome visitors to the Lodge and hope to see you again soon.

Ladies Night 2019

Ann & Stefan were delighted to welcome family, friends and Brethren together with their wives and partners to what proved another very successful and enjoyable Ladies Night Celebration at Castle Grove Masonic Hall.

As everyone arrived they were entertained by Liz Keeting and her guitarist with some excellent relaxed jazz. It was a great opportunity to meet, renew acquaintances and introduce new friends with the bar open for pre-dinner drinks.

After the initial formalities everyone settled down for an excellent three-course dinner and as always the staff at Castle Grove did us proud!

We were delighted to welcome representatives from the two charities which are the Master’s Charities this year, namely the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and the William Merritt Centre. I am delighted to announce that the raffle raised £350 for the Charities and the running total so far is a fantastic £1700. Thank you everyone for your generosity.

After the customary toasts, speeches and excellent rendition of the Ladies Song superb entertaiment by Lizy & The Crescendos ensured that we all danced the rest of the night away.

Rain fails to dampen spirits!

Sadly the weather conspired to make the planned crown green bowls competition impossible this year as persistent rain continued throughout the day. Poor weather however failed to dampen spirits as around thirty St Wilfrid Lodge members, wives, partners and friends gathered at The Queen’s Arms for what has now become a regular fixture on the Lodge Social Calendar.
Instead the morning proved an excellent opportunity to catch up with news, chat, play cards or dominoes or even watch the World Cup Rugby Tournament.
A super morning in excellent company as always! And this was followed by a very tasty carvery lunch. There were even a few hardy individuals who braved the elements to get a bit of practice in readiness for next time when hopefully the sun will shine!

Three Peaks Conquered

St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to take up the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge with a team of six walking. The Yorkshire Three Peaks includes Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. The walkers started their 25 mile route from Horton-in-Ribblesdale at around 7am., climbing first up Pen-y-Ghent then towards the Ribblehead Viaduct, up Whernside then down to Chapel le Dale, and finally up and down Ingleborough to finish back in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. A superb effort by everyone with the last walkers arriving back at around 8.45pm. Amit, Gerry, Ian, Joe, Paddy & Tim raised funds for St George’s Crypt with which the Lodge has had a long association, raising a total of £800. The event was a joint venture to raise funds for both St George’s Crypt and St Patrick’s Mission with a total of 32 walkers taking part in the fundraising. Happily the weather proved kind and did not cause any extra difficulties for the challenge which is in itself hard enough! Well done everyone!!

Despite poor weather during the week, the sun shone on the St Wilfrid Golfers again this year as they met to battle it out for the Cyril Green Trophy at Garforth Golf Club. In a keenly fought competition Chris Chappell won the trophy for a third time, having previously been champion in 2015 & 2016.
The golfers, Chris Chappell, Graham Fuller, Adrian Goldthorpe, Mel Harmer, Brian Mason, Stephen Till and Graeme Webber, were then joined by wives, friends and Brethren for a delicious celebratory dinner. The party of 28 had a very enjoyable evening in excellent company and look forward to meeting up again next August for this event which has been regularly held during the summer recess since its inception in 1955.

Thanks to everyone who was able to come along to take part or support the event, to Golf Secretary Brian and to Adrian for organising the event with Garforth Golf Club. I am also delighted to report that thanks to Adrian the green fees totalling £140 have very generously been donated to this year’s Master’s Charities, the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and the William Merritt Centre.

The golfers of The Lodge of Fidelity and St Wilfrid Lodges again gathered to renew their annual friendly rivalry to compete for the Robson Trophy. In brilliant sunshine, the golfers enjoyed an excellent afternoon of sport at The Leeds Golf Club with the St Wilfrid team this time surrendering the trophy in a closely fought competition which was settled only at the final hole!

St Wilfrid Lodge would like to thank The Leeds Golf Club for their generous hospitality, both Golf Secretaries for organising the event and the golfers of Fidelity Lodge for again proving such sporting opponents!

Andy & Linda certainly had plenty to cheer about after their Beer Festival proved a great success. Andy had been busy over the past few weeks brewing 15 excellent ales, lager, cider & Fizz whilst Linda organised a super buffet to ensure no-one was left hungry! The event was very well attended with nine or ten Lodges represented and great support from family & friends. Andy & Linda would like to thank everyone who was able to come along and support the event or contribute in any way, particularly those who helped with the drinks and serving the food and later helping clearing away!

Money was being raised for the two nominated Master’s Charities 2019-2020 at St Wilfrid Lodge, The Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and The William Merritt Centre and the Masonic Charity of Legiolium Lodge in Castleford.

Andy & Linda are hoping that in the region of £1000 has been raised when final donations have been received. A superb event and brilliant fundraising thanks to everyone’s support & generosity. Well Done Andy & Linda! Cheers!

On a busy evening at St Wilfrid Lodge the Brethren were delighted to welcome their newest Brother, James Calam, into the Lodge. For their first full ceremony of the Masonic year, the Lodge were very pleased to welcome a large group of distinguished visitors including the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro Ian Lewis, who was visiting in a private capacity.

We are all pleased to congratulate James and wish him many happy and successful years with us.

The Worshipful Master, W.Bro Stefan Kurth, wishes to thank and congratulate his team and everyone who contributed to the ceremony, making this such a memorable occasion for both James & Richard. Thanks also to all our visitors who came along to support St Wilfrid Lodge and it’s two newest members, we are always delighted to welcome visitors to the Lodge and hope to see you again soon.

A Morning Stroll & Sunday Lunch

St Wilfrid Lodge met for an excellent Sunday Lunch at the Bingley Arms in Bardsey with a small group electing to go for a morning stroll through the nearby Hetchell Woods to build up a good appetite before hand.

The walkers were then joined by a goodly number of diners for drinks and a tasty Sunday lunch at the Bingley Arms.

An excellent event with great conversation in good company as always!

St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to welcome Lisa Williams from the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund who gave an informative, interesting and at times moving presentation on the work of the Charity at our Supper Night.

The Fund is one of the two charities chosen as the ‘Master’s Charities’ this year together with the William Merritt Centre. Funds will be raised throughout the year, primarily at our numerous social events. The inspiring talk and presentation were very well received with Lisa telling us about the work done by the Charity, it’s current activities and its hopes for future developments. We were certainly motivated to maximise our fund raising efforts!

W.Bro Raj Khullar celebrates 40 years as a Freemason in St Wilfrid Lodge this year and to mark this landmark event Raj was presented with a special certificate by W.Bro Stephen Till on behalf of the Lodge. Raj has had a long and distinguished career within the Lodge, playing a very active part in its Masonic, charitable and social life and serving as Master in 2000. Stephen highlighted some of the landmarks in Raj’s personal and Masonic life before everyone retired from the Lodge for an excellent meal in great company.

75th Anniversary of D-Day

June 6th 2019 sees the 75th anniversary of D-Day. On D-Day itself 156,000 allied troops landed on five beaches in Normandy to begin the liberation of Europe. Allied forces consisted primarily of British, Canadian & U.S. troops but also included Australian, Belgian, Czech, Dutch, New Zealand, Norwegian, Polish and Zimbabwean naval, air & ground support. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history.

7,000 ships and landing craft and 10,000 vehicles were involved. Around 4,400 combined allied troops sacrificed their lives that day and there were thousands of French civilian casualties. Allied casualties totalled over 10,000 that day. It proved to be a major turning point in World War II.

We will remember them.

William Merrit Centre Talk

St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to welcome General Manager David Blythe and Paediatric Occupational Therapist Sophie Thomson to talk to us about the history and work of the Centre at our Supper Night.

The Centre is one of the two charities chosen as the ‘Master’s Charities’ this year together with the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund. Funds will be raised throughout the year, primarily at our numerous social events. The talk and presentation were very well received with David and Sophie telling us about the history of the Centre, its current activities and its hope for future development. We are hoping to raise funds specifically to support children and young people who use the Centre and were pleased to see example of some of the special equipment needed.

St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to welcome sixty Brethren and visitors to witness and celebrate the installation of its new Master, Stefan. We were very pleased to Welcome VW.Bro John Rushworth, PGSwdB, Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master, the personal representative of the Provincial Grand Master together with numerous distinguished guests and friends to a memorable ceremony.

Retiring Master Chris Chappell led the ceremony in style, ably assisted by his team of Installing Officers. A great deal of hard work by the Brethren of the Lodge behind the scenes in preparing for the day, issuing invitations, printing menus and organising table plans, preparing the Temple and the Festival of St John paid off in style! A super evening for members and guests alike followed by a great opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, catch up with friends and make new ones over a delicious meal in the Castle Grove Ballroom. Everyone was also treated to a gift of a specially brewed ‘Installation Pilsner’ courtesy of our newly appointed Junior Warden Andy.
Chris has enjoyed a very successful year as Master and Stefan and his newly appointed team are looking forward to building upon his achievements in the coming year.

A Super Murder Mystery Dinner!

The Whodunwot Players [aka Kippax Dramatic Society] returned by popular demand to entertain and put our detective skills to the test with their latest mystery, Holiday to Murder. The St Wilfrid detectives were out in numbers as almost eighty sleuthing Brethren, wives and friends gathered on the Isla Fantasma, few miles off the Spanish mainland. We gathered in the dining room of the island’s only hotel, Casa Embrujada. We were soon joined by members of the Stillingford Ghost Hunting Team. As we all enjoyed a delicious three course Spanish meal, events took a tragic turn with a very suspicious death!

Clues and red herrings abounded as the teams of detectives tried to solve the baffling crime. Should witnessing a murder be an enjoyable experience? Thanks to an enthralling script and excellent acting this dramatisation managed to entertain, confuse, amuse and challenge our investigative and observational skills.. ‘That was excellent’ & ‘Can we do this again?’ was again the verdict. A great success and a really enjoyable evening in excellent company!!

This was the final social event of the Masonic year and thanks to the tremendous support given to this and all the raffles at each of the events this year, a grand total of £1600 has been raised for the Master’s Charities, Prostate Cancer UK and Martin House Children’s Hospice. A big Thank You to everyone for their outstanding generosity.

St Wilfrid Lodge have had a long-standing association with St George’s Crypt in Leeds, supporting their appeals and making regular donations over many years. In November 2018, St Georges Crypt launched an appeal for the funding of a state-of-the-art industrial washing machine. The current machines used to launder the large amounts of towels and bedding used daily at the Crypt were unable to cope and needed urgent replacement. We met and quickly agreed to make an application to the Provincial Grand Master’s Fund for a grant of £5,000 towards the projected cost of £8000. We were delighted to learn that a full grant of £5000 was made and the good news was passed to the Crypt by the Lodge Charity Steward, W Bro Sudarshan Hargun. The Crypt’s target purchase figure was reached by mid-January 2019, the washer ordered and installed and now just awaiting commissioning.

The photograph shows W Bro Brian Mason and W Bro Sudarshan Hargun handing over the Provincial Grand Master’s Fund cheque to Kim Parkinson, the Crypt’s Housekeeper, with the new washer in the background, ready to deal with the daily mountain of laundry!

Kim and her staff were clearly delighted with our efforts:
“I can’t tell you how much of a difference our new Electrolux washer will make to daily life at the Crypt. We are caring for so many people with complex needs now and your kind donation means that we can be confident that we are dealing with laundry to hospital standards. This is vital because we need to ensure that we minimise the risk of infection – the ability to use a sluice & disinfect cycle means that we will no longer have to dispose of all soiled bedding as we can ensure blood borne viruses are eliminated safely. The machine can cope with any type of washing powder, which is great as we rely heavily on donations – there is scope for us to bleach items if necessary as well as use fabric conditioner and as a result our laundry will not only be super clean but sweet smelling too!

We have managed – just – for so long with limited facilities & the extra capacity we now have means that we can put the equivalent of nearly 3 previous loads into our new washer. No wonder then that my team and I are so delighted!
Hospitality is so important to us and being able to deliver to a high standard makes all the difference to anyone who comes through our doors. Tonight we will be providing beds for up to 50 of or most vulnerable people. The laundry that this generates can at times seem overwhelming. Having an effective means of dealing with it all has made us all very happy!

Burns Night was again celebrated at St Wilfrid Lodge with Brethren, wives, partners and friends meeting to enjoy an excellent meal with Haggis, Scottish Sirloin and Salmon on the menu. We were again pleased to welcome W. Bro Norman Forsyth to address the Haggis and give the traditional toast. Another thoroughly enjoyable night in great company!

A Great Start to Christmas!

St Wilfrid Lodge again enjoyed their festive celebrations in style as sixty three Brethren, wives, partners and friends gathered for the Christmas Lodge at Castle Grove. We were delighted to welcome the St Mary’s Youth Theatre Choir who entertained us with a selection seasonal songs. The singing was excellent and I hadn’t appreciated how good the acoustics in the foyer were!

The very convivial festive evening continued with an excellent Christmas meal. The occasion was complemented with a festive quiz and a raffle, which raised £250 for the Master’s charities which this year are Martin House Hospice and Prostate Cancer UK. A thoroughly enjoyable evening all round was concluded with enthusiastic renditions of a number of popular carols – I’m not quite sure many would make it into the SMYT Choir, but we did our best! Another good evening in great company!

St Wilfrid Lodge again celebrated Ladies Night in style this year at Castle Grove Masonic Hall. The event was very well supported ensuring a lovely evening was had by all in this annual celebration in recognition of the enormous contribution the wives and partners of all the members of St Wilfrid Lodge make to our Masonic Life.
Particular thanks go to the Master, Chris, his wife Sarah together with Social Secretaries Ann & Stefan supported by Gillian & Gerry for preparing and organising a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Everyone’s generosity helped raise £275 from the raffle for the Master’s Charities, Martin House & Prostate Cancer UK. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed prizes or took part in the draw.

A wonderful evening celebrated with great company, fine dining and excellent entertainment again provided by Leeds’s own Liz Keeting. The dance floor was full from start to finish!

In what has now become an annual event, Lodge members, wives & friends gathered again to compete for the Herbert Bolton Coronation Trophy at the Queens Bowling Club. The weather was dull but the competition certainly wasn’t as the competing pairs enjoyed a very enjoyable morning before retiring to the carvery for a well deserved lunch.

After a very tasty lunch the four highest scoring teams battled it out for a place in the final where Anne & John emerged as resounding and very worthy champions to retain the trophy for a second year. An excellent day’s sport in great company! Congratulations to everyone who took part!

St Wilfrid Lodge at Yorkshire Day Celebrations

St Wilfrid Lodge joined in the annual Yorkshire Day celebrations at Lotherton Hall for the first time this Year with volunteer members and wives manning a stall throughout the day. There were a host of activities during the day with choirs, musicians and brass bands providing entertainment whilst the crowds visited the numerous stalls. Our stall featured games for children of all ages including ‘Splat the Mouse’, ‘Quoits’, ‘Hook the Ducks’, ‘Knock ‘Em Down’ and ‘Play Your Cards Right’ to name a few. One young visitor was heard to remark ‘That was one of the best stalls!,’ and we certainly were busy all day!!. Information about St Wilfrid Lodge and Freemasonry in general was available and whilst the games themselves were free to enter, donations toalling a very pleasing £120 were accepted on behalf of the Master’s Charities this year, Martin House Hospice & Prostate Cancer UK.

We were also pleased to welcome the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Graham Latty, and his wife, Cllr Pat Latty, the Lady Mayoress to our stall.

Twenty Brethren then gathered at the 19th hole to see the trophy presented to WM Chris Chappell. A very enjoyable supper in excellent company provided a fitting end to a really good day!

As we all enjoyed a delicious three course meal, events took a tragic turn with a very suspicious death!

Clues and red herrings abounded as the teams of detectives tried to solve the baffling crime. Should witnessing a murder be an enjoyable experience? Thanks to an enthralling script and excellent acting this dramatisation managed to entertain, confuse, amuse and challenge our investigative and observational skills.. ‘That was tremendous fun’ & ‘Can we do this again?’ was the verdict. A great success and a really enjoyable evening in excellent company!!

The St Wilfrid Clan gathered again in numbers on Burns Night with Brethren, wives, partners and friends meeting to enjoy an excellent meal with Haggis, Scottish beef and salmon on the menu. We were again pleased to welcome W. Bro Norman Forsyth to address the Haggis and give the traditional toast. Another thoroughly enjoyable night in great company!
A raffle in support of the Master’s charities, St Gemma’s Hospice and Yorkshire Cancer Care, raised a very pleasing £194.

Gilbert’s 50th Celebration

This Masonic year has been a very special year for our Master, Gilbert Jarrett. Not only does he celebrate his 70th birthday, this year marks his 50th year in Freemasonry. It also coincides with St Wilfrid Lodge’s 70th birthday, the bi-centenary of the Province of Yorkshire West Riding and the ter-centenary of Freemasonry in England. He is also the first to sit in the Chair of King Soloman for a second time in our Lodge. An auspicious occasion indeed! And to mark this very special event St Wilfrid Lodge was delighted to welcome almost a hundred Brethren to the celebration. There were 68 visitors representing 32 different Lodges, many of whom had travelled some distance, a mark of the esteem in which Gilbert is held. The Very Worshipful Brother John Rushworth, PGSwdB & PDPGM, presented Gilbert with a special certificate to mark the occasion and recalled the highlights of Gilbert’s long and extensive Masonic career. The evening concluded with a very enjoyable Festive Board. Good food in good company! Happy did we Meet and we hope Happy Meet Again!

St Wilfrid Lodge again enjoyed their festive celebrations in style with Brethren, wives, partners and friends gathered for the Christmas Lodge at Castle Grove. Back by popular demand, accomplished musician Jacob Savage got the evening got off to an rousing start as he accompanied us for heartily sung ‘Carols Round the Tree’. The very convivial festive evening continued with an excellent Christmas meal whilst Jacob entertained . The occasion was complemented with a festive quiz, the seasonal raffle [ which raised £195 for the Master’s charities] and of course excellent company! A throughly enjoyable evening all round !

At our June Regular Meeting we formally recognised and celebrated the award of Provincial Honours to yet another member of our Lodge. Worshipful Master Gilbert Jarrett presented W.Bro Mike Aspden with the Regalia which marks his promotion to the rank of Provincial Junior Grand Deacon. Mike, a member of St Wilfrid Lodge since 1991 and it’s Master in 2010, had received his Honour at the May meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge in recognition of his contribution to Free Masonry. St Wilfrid Lodge were delighted to welcome almost eighty Brethren and visitors to witness and celebrate the installation of its new Master, Gilbert Jarrett. We were very please to welcome W.Bro Raymond T. Lodge, the personal representative of the Provincial Grand Master together with numerous distinguished guests and friends to a memorable ceremony. This year is a very special year, marking Gilbert’s 50th year as a mason, the 70th birthday of the lodge, the Bi-Centenary of the Province and the Ter-Centenary of Freemasonry in England. Gilbert succeeds W.Bro Gerry Holliday who led an excellent ceremony. Gerry has enjoyed a very successful year as Master and Gilbert is looking forward to building upon his achievements in the coming year.

A tempting menu has been arranged and we are to be entertained with Musical Entertainment by Jacob Savage.
There will be a Christmas Quiz and Christmas Raffle.
Jacob started playing piano aged five and by seventeen, had achieved a classical diploma and won both the junior and senior John Ogdon Scholarships. He wrote a musical and was then accepted into Leeds College of Music to study composition in which he gained a First Class degree after two years.
